Ammon News - The Israeli occupation intends to begin construction of a new fence along its border with Jordan next June, and its is expected to take three years, at a cost of 5.2 billion shekels ($1.4 billion).
According to a previous report by the Times of Israel, the fence will extend from Hama Jedir on the southern edge of the Golan Heights to Ramon International Airport north of Eilat. A 30-kilometer stretch of the border with Jordan, from Eilat to Ramon Airport, has already been developed.
The occupation aims to build the fence as close as possible to the actual border with Jordan, taking into account security and topographical considerations. It also plans to develop new cities along the border.
According to the newspaper, an old wire fence equipped with sensors runs along part of the border shared by Jordan with Israel and the West Bank, while the rest of the border is limited to barbed wire.
Israel justifies its intention to build the fence due to the frequent border crossings for weapons and other smuggling.
Repeated calls for fence construction
Last August, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz called for the rapid construction of a "security fence" along the Israeli-Jordanian border.
In November, the Israeli Ministry of Defense announced that it had begun preliminary work on the project.
In 2012, Netanyahu instructed IDF and Ministry of Defense officials to begin planning. He announced the start of construction of a sensor-equipped fence on the southern border with Jordan in 2015, and in 2016, he announced his intention to "surround the entire State of Israel with a fence."
In September 2023, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially announced that Israel intended to build a border fence with Jordan.
Netanyahu tweeted at that time: "We built a fence on our southern border (Egypt) and stopped infiltration from there into Israel. In doing so, we stopped more than a million infiltrators from Africa who would have destroyed our country."
"Now we will build a fence on our eastern border (Jordan) and ensure that infiltration from there as well cannot occur. We will protect our borders—we will protect our country!," he added.
In September 2024, Netanyahu made a field visit to an Israeli military site overlooking the Jordan Valley border area. He stated that work must be done to build a strong wall on the border with Jordan to secure the eastern border, emphasizing that the challenges are increasing.
