Russia and Ukraine each claim the other violated the one-day Easter truce

20-04-2025 06:16 PM

Ammon News -

Russia and Ukraine traded accusations on Sunday over violations of a one-day Easter ceasefire, initially declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both sides claimed the other had carried out hundreds of attacks despite the truce.

Putin, who initiated the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, had directed Russian forces to halt all military operations along the frontline until midnight on Sunday, Moscow time.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of faking compliance with the ceasefire, stating that Russian forces continued to launch artillery strikes on Saturday night and resumed attacks on Sunday. Posting on X, Zelenskyy said Russia had carried out 26 assaults between midnight and midday.

He added, "Either Putin lacks full command over his troops, or this shows that Russia has no real interest in peace, only in gaining positive publicity."
