13-01-2025 10:12 AM

Ammon News - Minister of Culture Mustafa Rawashdeh and his Palestinian counterpart, Imad Hamdan, emphasized the unique ties between Jordan and Palestine rooted in shared cultural, social, and emotional bonds.

During their meeting on Sunday at the Royal Cultural Center, Rawashdeh reiterated Jordan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II. He highlighted the King’s speech at the UN General Assembly last September, calling for an end to Israel's war on Gaza, which has resulted in mass destruction and human rights violations, as well as ongoing aggression in the West Bank.

"The Palestinian cause is Jordan’s cause," Rawashdeh said, recalling the sacrifices made by Jordan Armed Forces on Palestinian soil. He expressed the ministry's readiness to cooperate with its Palestinian counterpart in various cultural and artistic fields.

Jordan’s Cultural Initiatives
Rawashdeh outlined the Ministry of Culture’s programs, projects, and infrastructure, including cultural centers across the Kingdom, equipped with theaters and venues hosting diverse events. He also mentioned the ministry’s focus on creative cultural industries, highlighting key festivals like the Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts and various theater festivals for children, youth, and professionals.

He elaborated on initiatives such as the Jordanian Cities and Districts of Culture program, the "Reading for All" campaign (the Family Library Project), and the mobile library service. Additionally, he emphasized the Directorate of Heritage’s work in preserving intangible Jordanian heritage and registering it on global heritage lists.

The minister announced upcoming projects, including the Jordanian Song Festival, Children’s Theater Festival, and other cultural endeavors.

Palestinian Perspectives

Hamdan described the visit as a step toward strengthening ties and cooperation between the two nations, stating, "We in Palestine consider ourselves one people with Jordan." He praised Jordan’s expertise in cultural affairs and expressed interest in learning from its experiences.

Hamdan commended King Abdullah II’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause on international platforms and highlighted the vital role of the Hashemite Custodianship in safeguarding Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites, particularly Al-Aqsa Mosque, amid Israeli plans targeting it.

He discussed the devastating impact of the war on Gaza in 2023, which affected all aspects of life, including culture. The Palestinian Ministry of Culture focused on commissioning and supporting literary works by writers in Gaza, many of whom were martyred during the conflict. Hamdan noted their writings reflect the horrors of the Israeli aggression and the destruction of Palestinian culture and heritage.

He also mentioned initiatives aimed at supporting children in Gaza, particularly in arts like drawing and painting, enabling them to express their experiences and suffering.

Hamdan celebrated the recent recognition of Nablus soap-making, a craft with over 1,000 years of history, as part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Joint Cultural Conference
The meeting concluded with Hamdan proposing a joint cultural conference under the theme "Jordan and Palestine," involving various cultural and artistic sectors. Rawashdeh welcomed the idea, pledging the ministry’s support to study and explore its implementation.
