€497 million in European investment support to Jordan in 2024

05-01-2025 10:49 AM

Ammon News - The European Investment Bank (EIB) signed with the government 4 financing agreements with Jordanian projects with a total value of €497 million, to support vital development projects including the health, water security and climate change adaptation sectors, in addition to the national carrier project between Aqaba and Amman.

The agreements included financing part of the Aqaba-Amman water desalination and transfer project (the national water carrier) worth €47 million, which was signed on June 6, 2024. The project aims to provide 300 million m3 of potable water to the city of Amman and other governorates, with the possibility of supplying areas located along the project line, according to the bank's data.

The water is planned to be produced using seawater reverse osmosis technology at a station located south of Aqaba, and then transported to Amman via a transmission line approximately 420 kilometers long that runs parallel to the existing south-north transmission line.

Last October, two agreements were signed to support water security and climate change adaptation projects, with a total value of €449.1 million.

These projects aim to implement small investments to reduce unaccounted for water, increase water supplies, and improve sanitation services in various regions of Jordan.

The two agreements focus on improving water security, supporting climate change adaptation plans and financial sustainability, in line with Jordan’s National Water Strategy and European cooperation objectives.

The 4th agreement, signed on October 14, 2024, was allocated to support the public health sector in the amount of €990,000.

The funding aims to enhance the Jordanian health sector’s ability to confront the Corona pandemic by financing emergency measures to enhance the sector’s response and prepare it to face future health challenges, thus contributing to enhancing preparedness to confront health crises.
