Ammon News - Energy and oil expert Hashem Akel called for releasing rabbits into the desert to spread vegetation.
In a post on Facebook, Akel asked: "Do we benefit from the Chinese experience in combating desertification?", noting that China released 1.2 million rabbits to combat desertification, after 30% of the land had been transformed into desert lands and after limited afforestation operations.
China has resorted to spreading rabbits that can withstand heat and search for grass roots and leave plant seeds in their droppings, which contributes to spreading vegetation in the desert, Akel said.
Aqel also indicated that releasing rabbits leads to improving soil quality and increasing vegetation cover, as the percentage of land containing plants in China increased from 3% to 84% in less than 10 years.
