Jordanian architect Sahel Al Hiyari wins Great Arab Minds Award

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has announced Sahel Al Hiyari, an architect and urban designer, as the winner of the Great Arab Minds Award in Architecture and Design.

“Congratulations to architect Sahel Al Hiyari, the winner of the 2024 Great Arab Minds Award in Architecture and Design. Hailing from Jordan, Al Hiyari draws inspiration from the natural beauty and rich heritage of his homeland, creating designs that seamlessly blend tradition with modernity, and identity with nature. His portfolio includes numerous distinctive architectural projects, alongside his contributions to teaching architecture and presenting his research at prestigious international universities,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted.



“The Arab world boasts a rich architectural heritage, and our projects across the region tell the stories of the civilization and prestige we have built throughout history,” he added.

Al Hiyari was recognised for his pioneering contributions to modern Arab architecture.

Renowned for blending contemporary design with traditional architectural elements, Al Hiyari creates spaces that harmonise heritage, modernity, and nature. His projects stressed sensitivity to local context and sustainability by incorporating local materials and techniques, preserving natural resources, and enhancing cultural identity.

In addition to his architectural achievements, Al Hiyari has contributed significant research on contemporary architecture and taught at esteemed institutions, including the American University of Beirut, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Harvard University, and Columbia University.
