Ammon News - According to a statement by the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority today, Wednesday, over 85,000 tons of bombs have been deployed by the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the conflict on October 7, 2023.
As per the report, the official mentioned that "the quantity surpasses what was used in World War II," pointing out that the Israeli military employed various weapons and shells in its continuous assault, particularly the illegal white phosphorus, leading to significant ecological harm endangering both people and wildlife.
It was noted that the harm to water source infrastructure, causing polluted water to seep into groundwater basins, poses a health and environmental crisis that endangers hundreds of thousands of residents for future generations.
The Palestinian Environment Quality Authority in the West Bank reported that the settlements release around 40 million cubic meters of untreated wastewater into Palestinian territories each year.
According to the report from the Authority, the military training of the occupation army poses a significant threat to the Palestinian environment. The waste from training sessions harms water sources and contaminates the air, worsening environmental degradation. Additionally, large tracts of land are at risk of being seized, bulldozed, trees uprooted, and overgrazed.
The Environmental Quality urged the United Nations and global community to act promptly to halt the current aggression and prohibit the use of the environment for military reasons. It also emphasized the importance of following international laws in order to ensure environmental protection as a fundamental right connected to the right to a pollution-free, clean, and secure environment.
