NEPCO aims for 99.96% transmission network availability by 2026

27-08-2024 12:31 PM

Ammon News - The National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) has announced its goal to increase the availability rate of its transmission network to 99.96 percent by 2026, up from 99.92 percent recorded last year, as detailed in the company’s annual report.

The report, released on Monday, highlighted a 2.1 percent increase in the generating capacity from renewable energy sources and a 5.6 percent rise in traditional energy sources over the past year. Specifically, renewable energy capacity grew from 1,583 megawatts in 2022 to 1,617 megawatts, while traditional energy capacity rose from 4,208 megawatts to 4,443 megawatts.

Additionally, the report noted a 3.4 percent increase in purchased electrical energy, rising from 20,763 GWh to 21,473 GWh, and a 3.2 percent increase in sold energy, from 20,446 GWh to 21,105 GWh. Energy transit through the network also grew by 3.4 percent, from 119 GWh to 123 GWh.

The percentage of electrical loss on transmission networks decreased from 1.92 percent to 1.81 percent. The length of the 400 kV national network now spans 1,906 km, while the 132 kV network extended from 3,973 km to 3,983 km.

Capacities of the 132/33 kV main transformer stations reached 9,329 MVA, and capacities of 400/132 kV stations increased from 5,360 MVA to 6,360 MVA, reflecting an 18.7 percent rise. The maximum load of the electrical system also grew by 5.7 percent, from 4,010 MW to 4,240 MW.

The report further indicated that the number of outages per 100 km/circuit (400/132 kV) was 46.2 times, with an average outage duration of 62.9 minutes and a total outage time of 73.1 hours.

As part of its 2024-2026 strategic plan, NEPCO aims to boost the contribution of local resources to the energy mix from 34 percent to 36.2 percent by 2026. The plan includes increasing the share of renewable energy in the energy mix from 18.6 percent to 22 percent and reducing the percentage of unsupplied energy from 0.01 percent to 0.005 percent.

NEPCO is also committed to advancing its regional leadership in the electricity sector by expanding the number of electrical interconnection countries from four to five and maintaining electrical loss at 1.94 percent.

The company plans to reduce the rate of accidents per 200,000 working hours from 2.9 to 2.8, implement two digital transformation projects, and participate in both local and international electricity sector competitions.
