Ammon News - The Ministry of Water and Irrigation announced the temporary shutdown of the Disi water system due to vandalism on a main vent in the Jafr area on Monday evening.
According to a press statement issued Tuesday, technical crews and maintenance teams from the ministry and the Disi Water Company (DiWaCo) have been working since morning to repair the damage caused by the vandalism. The incident has partially affected some areas of the capital, Amman.
The ministry reported that unknown individuals broke a main vent along the water line in the Jafr area, causing a significant water leakage. This was allegedly done to water livestock and irrigate crops in nearby valleys, necessitating a complete shutdown of the system for immediate repairs.
The ministry emphasized that the vandalism of this vital national water resource will reduce the water supply to several areas and deprive others of sufficient drinking water until the vent is repaired. The ministry and the operating company are collaborating with security authorities to apprehend the perpetrators.
Despite measures taken to protect the 350-kilometer water line from Mudawara to Amman, acts of vandalism continue periodically. The ministry underscored its commitment to addressing violations and ensuring the safety of the water supply.
The shutdown will partially affect certain areas in Amman and Russeifa for six hours, including parts of Al-Baniyat, Al-Muqablin, Al-Yasmeen, Abu Sayyah village, Khalid village, parts of Al-Mughayyir, Al-Manara, Al-Harsha, Aden neighborhood, parts of Russeifa district, Al-Marqab, Abu Alanda, Al-Dahima, Al-Samou Al-Tarbawi, and parts of Tlaa Al-Ali, Khalda, Deir Ghbar, and Abdoun.
The ministry assured that all efforts are being made to complete the repairs and restore water pumping by this afternoon, aiming to return the situation to normal as swiftly as possible. Work is ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the vandalism, it added. Petra
