JD10,000 fine for spreading false information related to earthquakes on social media

Ammon News - Amman Criminal Magistrate Court, headed by Judge Odai Freihat issued its decision on Sunday against the publishers of audio recordings containing allegations of a large and devastating earthquake in the region, sentencing them to a fine of JD5,000 each.

The judicial body specialized in cybercrimes held its first session a month ago in the case of two defendants, 49 years old and 20 years old, accused of disseminating false information via an audio recording related to a catastrophic earthquake.

This is the first case of spreading false news and threatening national security and societal peace in which the judiciary has been resorted to to implement the provisions of the Cybercrime Law with its new amendments, which became effective as of the 12th of last September, and whose punishment, according to the provisions of the law, reaches imprisonment from 3 months to 3 years or a fine of JD5,000 to JD20,000.
