Ammon News - Ministry of Industry and Trade and Supply, confirmed that the wheat stock is sufficient for local consumption for 10 months and barley for 11 months, and tenders are constantly being issued to purchase more quantities from different origins.
The Ministry Spokesperson Yanal Barmawi emphasized that the stock of wheat and barley encompasses both the amounts agreed upon in contracts and those currently held within Jordan. Furthermore, efforts are underway to expand container construction in order to boost the storage capacity for wheat and barley.
In recent years, the Ministry has dedicated efforts to improve Jordan's storage capabilities for wheat and barley. This has resulted in a storage capacity of approximately one million tons, distributed across different silos and ground containers, thereby bolstering the overall stockpile.
The Juwaida silos have a storage capacity of approximately 220,000 tons, with 130,000 tons located in Irbid and another 130,000 tons in Al-Rusaifah. In Zarqa, there are ground containers that can hold up to 350,000 tons, and in Aqaba, the silos can store 100,000 tons, as Barmawi mentioned.
He also highlighted that the government allocated approximately JD80 million in support for flour in the previous year, demonstrating their dedication to maintaining the current bread prices.
