Ammon News - Jordan, Egypt, and Japan foreign ministers met on Tuesday in Cairo outside of the third session of the Arab-Japanese political dialogue to discuss cooperation and Middle East issues.
In a statement following the meeting, the ministers emphasized the "importance" of talks between Jordan, Egypt, and Japan to address regional issues.
Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri and Jordan's Ayman Safadi both expressed their gratitude for Japan's cooperation and the forward progress made thus far.
Regarding Palestine, the statement emphasized the "need" for the Middle East to come to a just, comprehensive peace that would put an end to Israeli control of all Palestinian and Arab lands following the 1967 war, including East Jerusalem.
The statement reaffirmed support for the Palestinians' right to self-determination, the illegality of Israeli settlement growth, and the "need" to maintain East Jerusalem's historical status quo.
In addition to emphasizing Jordan's Hashemite Custodianship over the holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, the statement praised Egypt for its efforts to promote Palestinian reconciliation.
The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) was praised in the statement for its role in providing assistance to more than 5.9 million Palestinian refugees across its five operational areas and for the necessity of the Agency continuing its work until a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian refugee crisis is found.
The statement called the international community to fund UNRWA adequately and sustainably in view of the organization's current financial predicament.
The statement welcomed the ministerial meeting, which Sweden and Jordan will host alongside the 78th sitting of the the United Nations General Assembly and which will help UNRWA garner more political and financial support.
