WHO: Turkiye, Syria quake worst natural disaster in Europe in a century

14-02-2023 04:47 PM

Ammon News - The World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday that the earthquake that so far left more than 37,000 people dead in Turkiye and Syria is the worst natural disaster in the WHO European region in a century.

"We are still learning about its magnitude, its true cost is not known yet, and recovering and healing will take time and a phenomenal effort", WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge told a press conference.

Kluge said the health body "initiated the largest deployment of emergency medical teams" in the 75-year history of the WHO European region.

He pledged that the WHO "will remain steadfast, alongside the people of Turkiye and Syria, for as long as it takes".

The WHO's European region comprises 53 countries, including Turkey. Syria is a member of the WHO's neighboring Eastern Mediterranean region.
