Ammon News - Over the past year, 9,277 Syrian refugees left the Kingdom to return to Syria or resettle in a third country, according to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The data showed that 4,013 refugees returned to Syria while 5,264 refugees resettled in a third country.

A total of 50,966 Syrian refugees returned to Syria in 2022 from various refugee-hosting countries including Jordan. This is compared to 35,624 returning refugees in 2021, 38,235 in 2020, and 94,971 in 2019.

Since 2016, 354,055 refugees have returned to Syria — 64,934 from Jordan, the data showed.

The UNHCR said that these are only the official figures for Syria returnees verified or monitored by the agency, and “do not necessarily reflect the full number of returnees, which could be much higher."

Resettlement

Meanwhile, a total of 22,526 Syrian refugees left their host countries for third countries under resettlement programs in 2022 — 1,813 from Egypt, 7,490 from Lebanon, 5,264 from Jordan, 7,158 from Turkey, and 801 from Iraq.

Canada, the US, Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, and the Netherlands received the largest number of resettlements.

Paving the way for voluntary return

Jordan has hosted more than 1.3 million Syrians since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011, 660,892 of whom are refugees registered with the UNHCR.

The reopening of the border between Jordan and Syria after three years of closure was announced on October 15, 2018, after the Syrian government recaptured the area around the Nassib crossing in July of 2018 through a Russian-backed offensive that lasted several weeks.

In October, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Al-Safadi said that the current situation in Syria and its negative repercussions on the region, especially neighboring countries, “cannot be tolerated”.

The minister stressed the need to intensify efforts to achieve tangible progress towards ending the crisis in Syria through a political solution that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people; guarantees Syria's unity, cohesion, and sovereignty; rids it of terrorism and external interference; and provides the necessary conditions for the voluntary return of refugees.
