Ammon News - "The new city is a major national and strategic project that will provide a better quality of life," said Minister of Government Communications and government spokesperson Faisal Shboul.
Shboul told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on Wednesday that the new city, which will cover a total area of 270 square kilometers with a projected population of one million by 2050, will alleviate the increasing population pressure on main cities, particularly Amman and Zarqa, improve the quality of life and services, drive economic growth and create about 90,000 to 100,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.
It will also offer well-thought-out and sustainable solutions for urban planning, land development, infrastructure problems, mobility, transportation, environmental systems, and clean energy, in addition to providing different types of high-quality housing at affordable prices, the minister added.
Shboul explained that the first phase of the project, which will be implemented on state-owned land, will cover an area of 25 square kilometers with an expected population of 157,000, and is expected to be wrapped up by 2033.
Responding to a question, the minister said that investments in the new city will be in partnership with the local private sector and foreign investors, as well as with a government's contribution of JD442 million throughout the duration of the project (2025-2050), at a rate of JD50 million annually.
Shboul also announced yesterday that the government allocated JD2 million to conduct studies on the comprehensive and detailed plan of the project as of the current year. He stressed that the government will not resort to any internal or external borrowing for the national project.
