Gov't says 'New City' project to create 90,000 job opportunities

07-12-2022 09:07 AM

Ammon News - Minister of State for Modernisation of the Public Sector Nasser Shraideh Tuesday said the Ministerial Economic Development Committee had looked over the "New City" project and that the project is expected to create 90,000 to 100,000 job opportunities during the construction period through 2033.

Shraideh added that the government hopes to start implementing the project in 2025, ending the first phase in 2033, noting that the project would finish in 2050.

In a dialogue session held by the Jordanian Strategies Forum to talk about the project, Shraideh said that the city would be located in the Amman governorate, saying the new city would not replace Amman as the capital.

During the session, which saw the participation of Dar Al Handasah Company which conducted preliminary feasibility studies for the project, Shraideh added that the designs for the project have now become available.

He added that the project "is not new" and was introduced in 2017; nonetheless, he said COVID-19 made the government remove it from its list of priorities.

He said the session is aimed at hearing the views and proposals that would support the implementation of the project, explaining that the government is holding a series of meetings with stakeholders.

He added that the project is part of the state's economic vision and aims to contribute to achieving sustainability, mainly to accommodate the population increase in Amman and Zarqa.
