Jordan signs memorandum to produce marine fuel

Ammon News - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Danish company “AP Moller Maersk” signed on Tuesday, a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the field of green marine fuel production, within the framework of the Kingdom's direction to expand clean energy sources and enhance local energy sources in the total energy mix.

The memorandum was signed by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh, Deputy Director of (AP Muller Maersk) and Director of Emission Reduction in the company, Morten Christiansen on the sidelines of Minister Kharabsheh’s participation in the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2022 (COP27) held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Environment, Dr. Muawiya Al-radaydah, and the Minister of Water and Irrigation, Dr. Muhammad Al-najjar.

Regarding the details of the memorandum of understanding, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources said that it comes within the framework of the royal directives to promote green partnerships and make Jordan a regional center for green development.

He added that the two sides will work through this memorandum to cooperate in the fields of researching the possibility of investment and developing a project to produce marine fuel” green methanol “in Aqaba, through desalinating sea water and exploiting renewable energy sources.

For his part, Christiansen stressed the importance of Jordan's location and choice due to its abundance of resources, pointing to the need to expedite the implementation of the memorandum's terms.

Under the memorandum of understanding, AP Moller Maersk will conduct preliminary technical and economic feasibility studies for the project, as the company aims from this investment to produce sustainable marine fuel “green methanol” in a way that contributes to reducing emissions in the shipping sector.

Maersk is one of the largest companies operating in the field of containers and shipping in the world, with offices and branches in more than 130 countries, and it works to reduce carbon emissions in the shipping sector by switching to the use of green marine fuels.
