Ammon News - The Director General of the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), Amjad Rawashdeh, said on Tuesday, that the Jordanian electrical system has witnessed and is still an accelerated development in the use of alternative renewable energy sources, whether wind or solar energy, and it has become about 30 percent of the total energy mix in Jordan.

He added at the opening of a workshop (Smart Grid Technology and its Role in Solving Problems Facing Modern Electrical Systems) organized by the Jordanian National Association " CIGRE " that Jordan has made great strides in the field of using smart grid applications, whether on transmission or distribution networks, which contributes to maintaining stability of the electrical system and ensuring a safe and continuous supply for all consumers and their different segments.

In this regard, Rawashdeh, who holds the position of Chairman of the Administrative Board of the “CIGRE” Association, said that the Jordanian electrical system has made great strides in this field by using advanced control and communication systems at the level of the transmission and distribution networks, as well as smart metering systems, forecasting systems for renewable energy plants and automated transfer stations.

He said that this challenge is great and requires joint cooperation at the knowledge and practical level between academics, scientific research institutions, the industry sector, and the energy and electricity sector, this challenge also requires knowledge and scientific exchange in these institutions to reach a smart electrical system similar to modern global electrical systems by finding viable solutions.

Rawashdeh stressed the importance of the workshop in researching the uses and applications of smart grids and its main role in solving the problems facing modern electrical systems as one of the pillars of modern energy systems in parallel with the commitment to environmental requirements.

For his part, the Secretary of CIGRE, Eng. Eid Assaf, presented CIGRE’s role and development, CIGRE’s national achievements and its national role. He pointed out that CIGRE was established in 1989 and is headquartered in the NEPCO and is looking forward to scientific and technical activities related to following up on scientific and technological developments in the electric power industry.
