Ammon News - Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission Khaled Toukan on Sunday stressed the need to preserve Jordan's right to uranium enrichment at low rates for future use as fuel in nuclear power plants.

Toukan’s remarks came during a workshop titled “Nuclear Energy in Jordan, Reality and Challenges”, organised by Hashemite University's Prince Hassan Bin Talal Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment to discuss the achievements of the Jordanian nuclear project.

It also shed light on the project’s achievments in building national scientific and technical capacities, the criteria for selecting nuclear plants, the commission's various services, especially in the industrial and medical fields, and the Jordanian uranium mining project.

The establishment of nuclear reactors using micro-reactor technology will help in the production of electricity and desalination operations, Toukan said.

He stressed the importance of improving human capabilities as the most significant factor in the success of the Jordanian nuclear programme.

The Jordanian nuclear programme includes three main strategic projects: Exploration and mining of uranium, the establishment of a nuclear plant for research and training, and the establishment of a desalination and power plant, he said, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

In the period between 2008-2017, the commission has sent 147 students to various Chinese, French, South Korean and Russian universities to obtain bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, he noted.
