Ammon News - Nearly 1,200 migrants have died or disappeared attempting to cross the Mediterranean in the first half of 2022, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced on Friday.

Dozens of migrants have been missing since Wednesday following the sinking of a boat south of Rhodes.

The boat suffered a leak and then sank. Since then, 34 people have been rescued by the Greek and Turkish coastguards, said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The survivors having provided different information regarding the number of migrants on board, the authorities fear that many people have drowned. Some survivors evoke 60 to 80 migrants present on board the 15-meter long boat.

The boat sank after leaving a small coastal town in Turkey, not far from Antalya.
