Ammon News - The Court of Cassation has upheld a January State Security Court (SSC) ruling, sentencing three drug dealers to prison terms ranging from one to four years in prison after convicting them of possessing illegal narcotics in Madaba in April 2021.

The court declared the defendants guilty of possessing illegal narcotics agents on April 29 and handed them four, three and one year prison terms respectively.

The court also ordered the defendants to pay fines ranging from JD4,000 to JD2,000.

Court documents said Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) investigators learned that the defendants were in possession of illegal narcotics and monitored their movements.

On the day of the raid, AND agents found large quantities of illegal narcotics, including heroin, hashish and Captagon pills, the court documents said.

The defendants contested the SSC’s ruling through their lawyers, arguing that the court “did not provide solid evidence to implicate their clients”.

Meanwhile, the SSC prosecution office asked the higher court to uphold the sentences and the fines imposed on the defendants.

The higher court maintained that the SSC had followed the proper procedures in issuing the sentences against the defendants.

“It was clear to the court that the defendants confessed willingly to possessing the illegal drugs,” the higher court said.

The Court of Cassation judges presiding were Mohammad Ibrahim, Hayel Amr, Fawzi Nahar, Ibrahim Abu Shamma and Majid Azab.
