Ammon News - The Jordan Labour Watch (JLW) called on the government to continue coverage of all agricultural workers in Jordan Social Security Corporation (SSC), and support small and medium farmers.
The JLW, affiliated with the Phenix Centre for Economic and Informative Studies, on Sunday said it rejects calls aimed at revoking agricultural workers' SSC coverage, adding that their inclusion under the SSC umbrella protects their rights.
Stressing the need to protect Jordan's agricultural sector by mitigating its pressures, the JLW said decisions to slash prices of various agricultural and animal production items and costs of issuing and renewing work permits for non-Jordanian expats would achieve the desired goals.
The JLW also called for providing support to the agricultural sector and its workers, as it is a "strategic" economic sector, closely related to Jordan's food security.
Jordan's agricultural sector is facing a problem in regulating business, especially in small and medium enterprises, where daily or weekly temporary work dominates labor relations, which requires more sustainable and fair formulas that preserve rights of workers and business owners, according to the JLW.
These hardships require the government's intervention to expedite protection of all stakeholder interests and safegurad the sector workers' basic rights, the JLW said.
