Lawmakers okay introduction of National Security, Foreign Policy Council

Ammon News - The Lower House of Parliament on Thursday passed an amendment to Article 22 of the Constitution introducing a new council, the mandate of which centers around the state's higher affairs, including security, defense and foreign policy.

A majority of 111 MPs voted for the introduction of the National Security and Foreign Policy Council while 9 lawmakers rejected it. According to the amendment, the council shall meet when necessary at the invitation of the King and in his presence or in the presence of whomever he delegates, and its decisions are enforceable upon approval by the King. The affairs of this council shall be organized according to a bylaw, the amendment stipulates.

According to the amendment, the members of the Council are the Prime Minister, the Ministers of Defense, Foreign Affairs and Interior, Army Chief, Director of the Department of Intelligence, Director of the Public Security Department, in addition to two members appointed by the King under a royal decree.
