Ammon News - Civil society organisations (CSOs) and women's societies organized a sit-down in front of the Parliament headquarter in Amman, to call for endorsing the amendment of article 6 of the constitution.
Secretary General of the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW), Salma Nims, said the today's sit-down, entitled "equality is a right", seeks to emphasize demands of the Jordanian women movement for more than 3 decades, which lie in amending article 6 of the constitution by adding the "no discrimination on the basis of gender," according to a statement by the organizers.
Nims added that what the women movement demands are present in more than 11 Arab countries, and haven't had any negative impact on society, family and social relations.
President of the Jordanian Women’s Union (JWU), Amna Zoubi, said equality and non-discrimination principles aim to enable women to carry out their duties and also constitute a key pillar of building the modern Jordanian state.
Secretary general of the People's Democratic Party (Hashd), Abla Abu Elbeh, said that today's sit down aims to emphasize the need for profound constitutional amendments to article 6 of the constitution, which states: "Jordanians shall be equal before the law."
Lawyer Nour Imam said: "We have come to confirm the demands of the women and human rights movement for decades, to amend article 6, by adding the term gender, in order to stop the discrimination on the basis of gender."
