Ammon News - The Minister of Environment Muawieh Radaideh participated Monday in the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP26, which is being held in Glasgow, Scotland.

The minister took part in multiple meetings and workshops prior and during the conference, highlighting the Kingdom's achievements on climate change.

During the second week of the COP26, Jordan pledged to join global efforts, led by the United States and the European Union, to reduce greenhouse gas methane emissions by 30% by 2030. This would prevent a 0.2-degrees Celsius increase that was expected by 2050, a major contribution towards achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Speaking about a climate workshop organized by the Union for the Mediterranean and the Government of Cyprus, Radaideh pointed out that the climate and environmental challenges facing the Mediterranean region include desertification and water scarcity, which requires countries to unite to address them.

Radaideh also discussed a regional initiative, launched by Cyprus with the participation of more than 80 countries, that is based on accurate scientific research to face environmental challenges and the consequences of climate change. Multilateral development banks and international institutions also have the opportunity to support the implementation of this initiative.

Meanwhile, during a meeting held by the Islamic Development Bank, the minister reviewed Jordan's achievements in addressing climate change, including the preparation of the Nationally Determined Contributions document and the National Executive Plan for Green Growth.

He pointed out the importance of international and multilateral banks' support for Jordan to achieve its goals, the procedures and projects to address climate change within the framework of sustainable development, and relying on an environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive green economy.

Radaideh also met with representatives of the Sahara Forest Project, which aims at providing fresh water, food and renewable energy in hot and arid regions, and the founder of the non-profit Bellona Foundation, which is overseeing the Sahara project's implementation in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone.

He underscored the importance of propping up the project to become part of the green growth projects in the agricultural sector, and leveraging it in capacity building and employment by creating green job opportunities.

During a separate meeting with the pointmen of the Nationally Determined Contributions Partnership, Radaideh highlighted the importance of the partnership to facilitate the development of the ideas developed under the plan to become fundable.
