Royal Decree dissolves Senate, Masri appointed President

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A royal decree was issued Thursday dissolving the Senate, the upper house of parliament, effective December 17th, 2009.
His Majesty King Abdullah II issued a Royal Decree Thursday appointing Taher Al Masri as President of the Senate effective Thursday, December 17, 2009, succeeding Zeid Rifai who resigned earlier this week.
Another royal decree was also issued Thursday appointing 54 new members of the Senate effective December 17th, 2009.
The new Senators include former Prime Ministers Taher Al Masri, Abdul Raouf Rawabdah, Nader Dahab, Ali Abu Al Ragheb, Faisal Al Fayez, Adnan Badran, Maarouf Al Bakhit, and Fayez Al Tarawnah.
Abdul Hadi Al Majali, Former Lower House speaker, was also appointed member of the Senate.
7 women are among the new appointees.
The King's decree to name a new Senate comes in accordance with stipulations of Article 36 of the Jordanian Constitution.
Masri yesterday sent a letter to His Majesty King Abdullah, stressing that he and the other senators will shoulder the responsibilities entrusted to them so that Jordan will continue with its development and reform process, while observing justice and equality.
He also pledged that the Senate will work to apply the principles stipulated in the Constitution.
