In its session on Thursday, headed by its President, Faisal Fayez, and attended by the Cabinet members, the Senate approved the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) draft law as referred by the Lower House.
Moreover, the Upper House returned the Integrity and Anti-Corruption Commission (IACC) Law to the Lower House, after making amendments to its provisions.
The GAM draft maintained appointment of the capital Amman mayor by Cabinet from the one-third elected members, meanwhile the capital's residents elect two-thirds of the GAM council’s members directly, with at least 25% of the seats allocated to women.
Under the GAM bill's mandating reasons, the need to provide quality services to the capital's residents, attract investments, retain Amman's legacy top the list.
As for the other bill, the Senate's amendments to IACC draft primarily include refusal to grant the IACC's power to take a decision to put corruption suspects in custody, seize their movable property, ban their travel without prior judicial permission, and maintain the original text that obliges the IACC to request an urgent decision in this regard from the competent judicial authority.
