ACC: Jordan's food file needs more attention to ensure long-term solutions

Amman Chamber of Commerce

Ammon News - Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC) Chairman, Khalil Haj Tawfiq, stressed the importance of making the food file a top priority by providing a strategic stock of goods and protecting citizens from rising prices, in line with the continuous Royal directives.

In an interview with "Petra," on Saturday, he said the food file "has always been a priority for His Majesty King Abdullah II, and a "red line," who called on the concerned authorities to follow up on this sector, which is most important to citizens' lives and social security.

Haj Tawfiq also stressed the need for a "clear" strategic plan for foodstuffs and an "accurate" database related to prices and import quantities on a regular basis.
Food security can only be achieved through integrating the industrial, agricultural and commercial sectors, solving obstacles and facilitating the flow of goods to the local market, according to Haj Tawfiq.

On future action, Haj Tawfiq called for launching a Supreme Council for Food Security, headed by the Prime Minister and comprised of ministries, institutions and departments specialized in importing foodstuffs, as well as representatives of the private sector concerned with food and agriculture, to solve and address obstacles "as quickly as possible."

He also called on establishing a Jordanian "price observatory" to follow up on price changes on ready-made materials, production inputs, oversee transport internally and externally, and submit a periodic report to decision makers to protect citizens from exploitation.
