The first route of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, the much-anticipated Amman public transport project, is now operating in dry-run mode, marking the completion of the first phase of this vital and strategic project.

Marking the trial operation, Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh boarded the maiden trip on the 16-km track, which took off from the Sweileh passenger station in northwestern Amman and arrived at the terminus station in Ras Al-Ain in Amman's downtown.

The first route starts at the Sweileh bus station, and runs through the Queen Rania Al Abdullah Street, the Sports City bus station, Sharif Nasser bin Jameel Street (Dakhliya Circle), Wadi Saqra, the Rabieh traffic lights, the Fifth Circle, Princess Basma Street, and Wadi Abdoun, and all the way to the Museum Station in Ras Al-Ain, according to a briefing by Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh.

Shawarbeh also noted that the five-minute frequency system will feature modern buses supplied with wireless Internet, CCTV surveillance and electronic payment services in addition to spaces for the disabled.

During a tour of the passenger station in Sweileh, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of "this vital and strategic public transport project" in the capital, which he said "has become a tangible achievement that meets the needs of citizens through safe and comfortable public transportation."

Khasawneh also underlined the need for operating the transport system efficiently, and in a manner that enhances citizens' confidence in public transport services.

"In implementation of the royal directives, the public transport sector has become a top priority in the government's work plans to improve public transport services," the premier said, assuring that the project, upon full completion, will play a major role in reducing traffic congestions as it replaces instead private buses and vehicles.

During the trial ride, Khasawneh and other top officials stopped at the University of Jordan station, which is equipped with escalators and a raised footbridge for university students. While encouraging adherence to infection prevention protocols, the prime minister said the law must be enforced against private or public vehicles that use or trespass on BRT routes.

The second phase of the project will begin next year from the Sports City Circle running through Al-Shaheed Street, Tariq Intersection, Prince Hamzah Hospital and Istiqlal Street all the way to the station area.
