Representative of the leather industries and knitting sector at the Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI), Ehab Qadri, said the US market imported nearly 85% of the Jordanian sector's exports, which reach 60 countries around the world.
In 2020, exports of leather and textile industries to the United States amounted to $1.435 billion out of the total sector's exporting value, which amounted to $1.670 billion, according to gov't statistics.
In an interview with "Petra," on Saturday, he said Jordan ranked 12th in terms of exporting leather products and woven industries to the United States last year, adding tyhat Jordan's exports constituted 1.2% of America's total imports of leather and woven products.
The US market, he said, is "promising" to increase Jordanian exports, as it ranks first among the world's largest importers of leather products and knitwear, with value amounting to about $126 billion last year, and nearly $135 billion in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Qadri pointed out that Jordan's leather and weaving industry has achieved "qualitative" leaps over the past two decades, attracted "important" investments from international products, which contributed to raising its production and operational capabilities and developing its mechanisms to reach global markets.
This expansion enabled the textile sector to provide thousands of job opportunities and reach an "important" position in the United States market, one of the largest attractive markets for clothing products globally, according to Qadri.
This achievement, he said, was achieved after Jordan and the United States signed the Qualified Industrial Zones Agreement in 1997, under which the Kingdom's products are exempted from customs duties and any quantitative restrictions when exported to the U.S. market.
