4.1 magnitude earthquake hits southwest of Wadi Musa

Ammon News - An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale was registered early Wednesday in the Wadi Araba region, according to the Jordan Seismological Observatory (JSO).

The earthquake, reported at 2:08 am, hit the area 35km southwest of Wadi Musa at a depth of 16km.

"The tremor occurred on the Dead Sea fault, extending from the southern city of Aqaba up to the Taurus Mountains in southern Turkey, and was felt by residents of the central and southern regions of the Kingdom," the JSO said.

The observatory, established in 1983, is located at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. It includes 20 telemetric seismic stations and 25 strong motion seismic stations operating around the clock to monitor local, regional and global seismic activity.
