Aqaba freight movement not affected by Suez Canal shutdown

29-03-2021 11:48 AM

Transport Ministry

Ammon News - Minister of Transport Wajeeh Azizeh on Monday said freight movement to and from Aqaba has not been affected by the shutdown of the Suez Canal, indicating that most of the Kingdom's imports come from the Far East.

However, he added, the ministry took the necessary measures to avert any adverse impact on the local market due to the blockage of the critical waterway.

The giant container ship blocking the Suez Canal was partially refloated early Monday, days after the vessel got stuck and brought a vital global trade route to a standstill, according to Egyptian authorities.

Yesterday, the Jordan Maritime Commission (JMC) said it had put in place a plan to organize the docking of more than 13 ships expected to arrive in Aqaba as soon as the waterway is reopened.
