Ammon News - The General Association for Foodstuffs Merchants of Jordan (GAFJO) on Saturday urged a wait-and-see approach and departure from releasing premature statements on the impact of the current shutdown of the Suez Canal on the Kingdom's food imports.

In a statement, GAFJO said "it will not be responsible for any statements made by some local parties not specialized in the foodstuff sector about the effects of the accident on the Kingdom's imports of foodstuffs and the delay in their arrival".

It also warned that some people would exploit this incident to make inaccurate statements that are not based on either experience or solid information regarding its impact on prices or stocks or the welfare of livestock shipments or imports for the holy month of Ramadan.

"Making such statements at this time may adversely affect markets and consumer behavior", GAFJO said, adding that "it will inform the public opinion of the various details in a timely manner and with full transparency."
