Ma'ytah: Job-creation necessary to achieve social justice

21-02-2021 11:41 AM

World Day of Social Justice

Ammon News - General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFTU) President Mazen Maytah said Saturday that achieving social justice requires the creation of job opportunities, strengthening the system of social protection for labourers and eliminating all forms of discrimination in the workplace.

In a press release marking World Day of Social Justice under the slogan "a call for social justice in the digital economy," he urged the development of legislation related to flexible labour, especially remote work.

"This occasion is an opportunity to reaffirm the right of everyone to work and to fair opportunities to obtain it, and eliminate all forms of discrimination, especially between the sexes, which contributes to achieving social justice among members of society and enhancing social security," he said.

Ma'ytah further said that the centennial of the Jordanian state currently being celebrated in the Kingdom places more responsibility on the part of the government to develop policies and programs to realize social justice, and strengthen the system of social protection for labourers, which helps to maintain a coherent and stable Jordanian society in the national building process.

The GFTU chief also pointed out that the coronavirus pandemic revealed so many weaknesses in the social protection structure that widened the social justice gap between members of the Jordanian society, especially those who work in the informal economy sector.

"There cannot be social justice without the worker receiving a suitable and fair wage that provides them with the requirements of a decent living and a secure livelihood, especially that wages at the national level are low and need to be raised," he commented.
