Meeting discusses challenges facing tourism sector

Ammon News - Tourism sector accounts for about 14 per cent of the Kingdom’s GDP, Senate President Faisal Fayez said on Wednesday. During a meeting organised by the Tourism and Heritage Committee to discuss the challenges facing the sector, Fayez stressed the importance of supporting the workers in this field, which has been hit by the pandemic.

Head of the panel Senator Nidal Qatamin said that the sector’s contributions to GDP totalled some JD4.1 billion in 2019, stressing that the impact of COVID-19 pandemic requires swift action to alleviate the challenges experienced by the sector, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Minister of Tourism Nayef Al Fayez, during the meeting, highlighted the government’s efforts in this arena, noting that JD20 million has been allocated to the Tourism Risk Fund, pointing out that this amount complements an earlier package of JD320 million, which was allocated to the "protection" programme of the Social Security Corporation.
