Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, and his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, held a consultative meeting on Sunday, on the eve of the ministerial talks with French, German top diplomats, Jean-Yves Le Drian, Heiko Maas, in Cairo Monday.
Cairo's talks will go over ways to find a political horizon to restart "serious and effective" negotiations to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.
Safadi and Shoukry stressed the importance of the 4th meeting of the Munich Group to look into ways to intensify efforts to achieve progress in the Middle East peace process.
The duo stressed the need to move "urgently" to resume "true" negotiations on the basis of international law and the Arab Peace Initiative to reach a two-state solution that embodies the independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, to live in peace and security alongside Israel.
Moreover, the two ministers discussed ways to develop bilateral relations and increase economic cooperation in various fields, especially in the energy, transportation and inter-trade areas, and deepen joint consultation and coordination on common issues and regional challenges, in implementation of the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
The duo affirmed continued action with other Arab countries to strengthen joint pan-Arab action and deepen Arab solidarity to serve Arab causes and interests, in a manner that guarantees the Arab nations' security and stability, protects their interests, and enhances regional stability.
The ministers reviewed progress in activating cooperation and increasing its economic, trade and investment horizons with Iraq in the context of the trilateral action mechanism.
In a related ontext, they emphasized the support of Amman, Cairo to the Iraqi government's efforts to stabilize, achieve economic development, and protect Iraq's security, sovereignty and stability.
Discussing developments in Libya and the efforts made to resolve the crisis, the duo emphasized support for all endeavors to reach an inter-Libyan political reconciliation that preserves Libya's security and its neighborhood, restores its stability, ends foreign interference in its affairs and serves interests of Libyan people.
They stressed the need to intensify efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis in a way that preserves Syria's security and unity and root out terrorism, warning of the dangerous repercussions of the continuing crisis.
Noting developments on the negotiations related to the Renaissance Dam, Safadi stressed the need to reach an agreement on mechanisms to fill the dam in accordance with international law that preserves the rights of Egypt and all parties, adding that "Egypt's water security is part of Arab national security."
The Kingdom hosted the 3rd meeting of the Munich Group in September 2020.
