The Chairman of Jordan Free Zone Investor Commission (JFZIC), Mohammad Bustanji, said the rise on "hybrid" vehicles tax by 5% in 2021 was part of the Cabinet's decision taken in June of 2018, which increases this fee by 5% annually.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, he said the fee now stands at 45% and scheduled to reach 55% in 2022.
The JFZIC had sent a petition to the Ministry of Finance several times to postpone the 2021 5% fee hike, but the response cited difficulties to alter, or postpone the tax increase, as such a decision requires the Cabinet's approval, he said, indicating that the commission has called on delaying the hike due to the repercussions of the Covid-19 crisis on free zones and to maintain growth rates that are currently being recorded.
The 5% fee increase to 45% will raise hybrid vehicle prices by values ranging from JD500 to JD1500, according to Bustanji.
On a related context, he pointed out that the vehicle clearance movement has witnessed an improvement in 2020, as a result of the incentives announced by the government in November 2019, which contributed to stimulating sales in the country's free zones.
These incentives were made in partnership and coordination between the JFZIC, and the Ministry of Finance, he noted.
