Ammon News - The Central Bank in Argentina are launching a new project which could see famous faces such as Diego Maradona appear on Argentinian bills.
The ex-footballer and now national team coach is widely recognised in Argentina and this is why he could be joining Jose de San Martin on the back of currency.
According to the founder of the Circulo Filatelico and Numismatico de Santiago del Estero (a monetary organisation in Argentina), Juan Carlos Barron and Maradona could be appearing with the liberator of Argentina, San Martin, for tourism purposes.
"For us [Argentinians], Belgrano, Roca and San Martin are all figures in our history, but a Canadian or Chinese person will not know what they mean. They would know who Diego Maradona who is though," he told El Siglo de Tucuman.
"What makes us think it is that he is a worldwide idol, just look at when he arrived in India and 50,000 people waited for him, and the same thing happened in China."
Certainly the face of Maradona is known around the world, and as he is the current Argentina coach even more people are likely to see him.
Barron admitted that this would not be the first time that a figure in the media spot light has appeared on money.
"It has happened for some years in France, where the bills carry the face of Brigitte Bardot, a famous icon of cinema in the sixties," he mused.
Whilst Maradona's inclusion is not certain yet, the Central Bank are known to be considering using writers, Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares, and Nobel Prize winners, Luis Federico Leloir and Bernardo Houssay.
