Around 577,000 new young voters are expected to cast their ballots in today’s parliamentary elections, hoping for change and a broader engagement in political life.
As more than 4.6 million Jordanians are expected to participate in the country’s 19 parliamentary vote.
Malak Hamdi, who has just voted in the polls, said she expects from the new legislature to address education as the cornerstone for development and work to pass legislation that ensure a wider empowerment of the younger generation.
Ahmad Mousa, a 19-year-old first-time voter, said he is participating in the polls to bring about the desired change and produce a parliament capable of safeguarding the state’s achievements and introducing laws that would contribute to comprehensive development.
According to Anas Ibrahim, another young voter who has just cast his ballot in an Amman area, said he believes that his participation in the elections is a national duty and a constitutional merit, adding that he hopes from the new parliament to push the government to roll out projects aimed at curtailing poverty and unemployment.
Ghosoon Abdul-Hakim said she is looking forward to a parliament capable of assuming its core mandate of drawing up robust political and socioeconomic policy.
In this year’s vote, which is conducted under exceptional circumstances prompted by the coronavirus pandemic, 1,693 candidates, including 364 women, are vying for seats in the 130-strong lower house of parliament.
