Gov't agrees on plan to resume work in construction sector

20-04-2020 03:23 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Ministry of Public Works and Housing has put in place a plan to jumpstart the construction sector, one of the most heavily affected by the COVID-19 economic fallout, to reboot the economy and provide jobs for day workers.

In a briefing at the National Center for Security and Crisis Management, (NCSCM), Minister Falah Omoush said Monday that the plan is aimed at stimulating the construction sector and addressing the issues caused by the economic ramifications of COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

The plan mainly seeks to support and sustain the small- and medium-sized businesses as they struggle amid governmental strict stay-at-home measures to stem the spread of the virus.

Omoush pointed out to the economic importance of the sector, as it is linked to dozens of sectors that would directly benefit from resuming work, which will contribute to rebooting the economic circle and provide jobs.

The Ministry has resumed work last week on five strategic plans: an emergency premises at the Al-Bashir Hospitals Complex, the Desert Road, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Amman - Zarqa, the Dead Sea bridges and the Hadalat road in northern Jordan. He underscored that strict safety measures will be followed.

On resuming work on private projects that provide jobs for workers and architects, Omoush said that the Ministry has started receiving work resumption applications. He said that they will be assessed to determine if they meet certain requirements and criteria, as companies that will get approved will be allowed to resume work as of next week after they obtain permits from the Ministry.
