House endorses transfer of powers in nationality, investment legislation

07-01-2020 10:53 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Lower House on Tuesday approved the transfer of some of the Council of Ministers' powers in the nationality, investment, traffic and Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) legislation to other entities.

During a session chaired by Speaker Atef Tarawneh and attended by cabinet ministers, the lawmakers kept the council' power to reinstate the citizenship to a Jordanian who gave it up to acquire another nationality, but granted the Minister of Interior the power to approve the renunciation of the Jordanian citizenship, instead of the council.

The amendment to the investment law includes transferring the power to assign any other tasks to the Investment Commission, instead of the Council of Ministers.

Regarding the traffic law, the legislature delegated to the Interior Minister the power to accredit a specialized entity to investigate accidents that only result in material damage, which was previously the jurisdiction of the council.

It rejected transferring the power to appoint an auditor to ASEZA from the Council of Ministers to the authority's Board of Commissioners.

The amendments are meant to ease the load on the Council of Ministers, enhance deregulation and administration and give the Council of Ministers ample time for strategic planning and drawing policies.

Tarawneh also announced that the House will on Sunday start the debate of the state budget.
