FM appreciates elected members of UN Security Council for condemning Israeli settlements

20-11-2019 03:31 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, Wednesday hailed the statement issued by the 10 elected members of the United Nations Security Council, which affirmed the illegality of settlements that undermine the two-state solution and chances of achieving peace.

"The announcement by the Israeli prime minister of his intention to work for the annexation of the occupied Jordan Valley is a declaration that all peace efforts have been killed," Safadi said in a tweet after the announcement of the 10 members at the end of a Security Council session.

Safadi stressed that "there is no comprehensive peace without the end of the occupation and restoring the Palestinian right to freedom and statehood."

The Security Council held its meeting two days after the United States announced a change of position on the illegality of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Safadi had affirmed Jordan's firm position in condemning the Israeli settlements and rejecting them as a violation of international law and resolutions, the latest of which is the UN Security Council resolution 2334.

Safadi stressed that nothing changes the illegality of settlements that the international community unanimously condemns, warning of the danger of the United States change of position towards the settlements and its impact on the efforts to achieve peace at a time when the peace process is facing unprecedented challenges as a result of Israeli policies and practices that undermine all opportunities for conflict resolution.

He underscored that "the dedication of the occupation and its injustice and breach of the resolutions of international legitimacy will not achieve peace, and will not guarantee security and stability."

The 10 states stressed that the settlements violate the resolutions of international legitimacy and Security Council resolutions and undermine the two-state solution and chances for peace, urging Israel to stop building settlements and to respect its legal obligations as the occupying power.
