Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan and Iraq signed on Saturday a protocol in the field of research on the peaceful use of atomic energy and production of radioisotopes from the Jordanian research and training nuclear reactor.

The protocol provides the opportunity to train Iraqi cadres in the civilian uses of nuclear energy.

Jordan Atomic Energy Commission Chairman, Khaled Toukan, who inked the deal with Iraqi Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Science and Technology, Qusai Al-Suhail, called it a "positive" step that lays the groundwork for short- and medium-term cooperation in this field.

He said the two countries maintained "strong brotherly" relations, stressing the importance of enhancing cooperation in all fields, including providing the Iraqi market with medical and industrial radioactive isotopes and the use of nuclear energy in the fields of medicine, agriculture, water and industry.

Toukan pointed to the importance of nuclear research reactors in building human resources, noting that the Jordanian reactor is pivotal in training nuclear engineers and building capacity in the field of licensing.

The Iraqi minister said his country is ready for cooperation in the export of radioactive iodine-131 for its use in diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine in the form of solution or capsules and the required radioactivity.

The minister and an accompanying delegation visited the Jordanian research reactor.
