Government committed to the principle of not jailing journalists, says Ghneimat

12-06-2019 05:32 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The government is committed to the principle of not putting journalists and media professionals behind bars on issues of opinion and publication, and pledges to defend the right of the media to exercise its role as a supervisory authority, the State Minister for Media Affairs, Jumana Ghneimat, said.

"The government believes in the role played by the media and the press as a fourth authority in monitoring its performance and criticizing its policies and procedures without any interference in its work, and highlighting faults to tackle them," the minister pointed out.

During her weekly conference with representatives of the official media and daily newspapers, Ghneimat noted the borderline between freedom of expression and its violation is the extent of its commitment to the Constitution and the law that affirmed the freedom of Jordanians to express their opinion without harming others or our national principles.

The minister referred to the government's commitment to develop laws and legislations to increase the level of press freedoms and the right to access and provide information to the public, pointing out the media and the press, committed to professionalism and objectivity, are tools to enhance confidence between the citizen and the state and its institutions.

With regard to Jordan's position on the proposals raised on the Palestinian issue, Ghneimat said Jordan's position, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, and expressed in various forums is "clear and unwavering," adding any economic proposal can not be a substitute for a political solution to end the occupation and achieve a just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the two-state solution, as a strategic objective in accordance with the international legitimacy laws and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The two-state solution, which Jordan believes in, should end the occupation of all the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 and guarantee the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 4TH June lines with East Jerusalem as its capital. This is a condition for achieving comprehensive peace which is a prerequisite for world peace and security, the minister pointed out.

Jordan, Ghneimat noted, has always warned of the consequences of the absence of prospects for progress towards a political solution and of deepening despair due to the continued occupation and violations of the rights of the Palestinian people, adding the current status quo is the basis of tension and conflict, which is the main obstacle to achieving economic development, security and stability in the region.

She called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards the Palestinian cause and the need for its positive involvement in the targeted efforts to face the regional challenges.
