Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A session organized by the European Union (EU) , the United Nations Development Fund for Women and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Tuesday discussed the impact of the Syrian crisis on women and girls in Syria and Syrian refugees in host countries.

The meeting was held in preparation for the Third Brussels Conference on Syria scheduled to be convened from March 12 to 14.

The participants said the international community must closely look at the progress it has made in terms of its commitments to meeting Syrian refugees' needs, especially women and girls, and reaffirm its commitment to protecting their lives and dignity until a political solution restores peace and security in Syria.

EU Ambassador to Jordan Andrea Fontana said the bloc will host, for a third consecutive year, an international conference on "Support for the future of Syria and the region" on March 12-14, which the United Nations will co-chair alongside the EU.

The conference will provide an opportunity to discuss and emphasize the importance of women's role in managing the Syrian crisis politically, socially and economically, Fontana added.

Representative of the UN Development Fund for Women Dina Zorba also presented the outcome of research conducted in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, which showed that the lives of Syrian refugees and displaced women are characterized by economic insecurity, limited employment opportunities and difficult access to humanitarian assistance.

Director of the humanitarian coordination unit at the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation Feda Ghraibeh, said the Jordan response plan to the Syrian refugee crisis needs an estimated $2.4 billion.
