Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - During its presidency of the Arab Summit, Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, managed to make key achievements at all levels, despite the difficult situation in the region in general and the challenges facing the Arab world.
US President Donald Trump's decision to transfer his country's embassy to occupied Jerusalem was a top concern for Jordan, which has tirelessly worked, making intense contacts at all levels and garnering wide international support for its stand in opposing the US move and supporting the Palestinians' right to set up their independent state.
The issue of Jerusalem and the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian sites in the holy city was at the centre of Jordan's diplomacy for the protection of the holy shrines and to stop Israeli violations and unilateral measures.
A key focus of Jordan's policy is relaunching peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis, with emphasis on the Arab Peace Initiative based on the two-state solution and the right of the Palestinians to establish their independent state on their national soil along the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Jordan has also advocated for reaching political solutions to the crises facing the Arab world, especially in Syria, Yemen and Libya, stop violence and bloodshed and pursue joint efforts to eradicate terrorism and to dry its sources.
An Arab League report on Jordan's presidency of the Arab summit stated that the Kingdom has from the start of its tenure had been closely and continuously coordinating with the Arab brethren on the latest political, security, economic and social issues of common interest, with the aim of adopting effective means to maximize Arab countries' capabilities to face challenges and serve joint Arab interests and issues.
The report said that the Palestinian cause, the central Arab issue, is going through a difficult and delicate phase of the nation's history as a result of the stalemate in the peace process and a lack of a political horizon.
There has been a clear quest and coordination with the Palestinians to launch serious and effective Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations, end the political stalemate and proceed according to a specific timeline to end the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, which guarantees setting up an independent Palestinian state on the June 4,1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, as the only means to bring about regional security and stability.
It pointed out that Jordan had stood against unilateral Israeli moves aimed at changing the realities on the ground and undermining the two-state solution, including illegal settlement building and land expropriations, as the Kingdom intensified contacts with the international community to carry Israel to stop its arrogance, settlement construction and unilateral actions, and to abide by the international legitimacy resolutions, to preserve the two-state solution.
The report said that in His Majesty King Abdullah's visits and meetings with kings, presidents and heads of state over the past year, as well as Jordan's entry of regional and international organisations and blocs, the Kingdom made it clear that comprehensive and lasting peace is a strategic Arab option, embodied in the peace initiative adopted by all Arab countries at the Beirut Summit in 2002, which was backed by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and remains the most comprehensive and viable plan to achieve a historic reconciliation, based on Israel's withdrawal from all the occupied Palestinian territories.
The report also said that the president of the 28th Arab summit, HM King Abdullah II, reaffirmed that a comprehensive and just peace in the region would only come about through the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, as partial formulas in addressing the region's crises or bypassing the Palestinian issue will never bring the stability aspired-for by Arabs.
"There will be no security and stability in the Middle East without a just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and without it, despair will prevail, extremism will expand, anger will increase and the situation will stand ready to explode at any moment," the King has warned, according to the report.
The report cited an agreement between the President of the Summit, His Majesty King Abdullah II, and the Egyptian and Palestinian presidents to establish a trilateral coordination mechanism to address developments in the Palestinian issue, and to direct the foreign ministers of the three countries to maintain communication to unify positions to safeguard legitimate Palestinian rights.
According to the report, HM King Abdullah II said that resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the cornerstone of finding solutions to the region's crises, and that Jerusalem is the key to its security and stability.
"Jerusalem was and remains our foremost priority, as we are the custodian of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in it. We have devoted all energies to preserve the longstanding legal and historic status quo in it and safeguard the Holy City and its identity and Islamic and Christian sanctities, especially the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Haram Al Sharif," it quoted the King as affirming.
