28-03-2018 04:24 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Ayman Safadi, on Wednesday met with Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee, Saeb Erekat, for a discussion on the latest developments in breaking the deadlock in efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, ahead of the upcoming Arab summit to be hosted by Saudi Arabia next month.

Safadi and Erekat said Jordan and Palestine are continuing to work together to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace, leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders.

They added that they are continuing to institutionalize and deepen the mechanisms of consultation and coordination, in implementation of His Majesty King Abdullah II and President Mahmoud Abbas' directives, in order to launch an effective effort to end the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, which meets the Palestinians' right to freedom and statehood on their national soil.

Both officials underlined the importance of working with the international community, in coordination with Arab parties, to address the repercussions of the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to reaffirm the status of Jerusalem as a final status issue that will be decided by direct negotiation, in accordance with relevant resolutions of international legitimacy, as well as emphasizing the status of East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state.

Safadi reiterated Jordan's full support for the legitimate Palestinian leadership, represented by President Mahmoud Abbas, in its efforts to meet the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Erekat commended Jordan's role in supporting the Palestinian people in their quest to establish their independent state, defending Jerusalem and its people as well as King Abdullah's great efforts, as the custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites, in defending Jerusalem and preserving its holy sites and its legal and historical status quo.
