King, Russian President hold summit meeting in Moscow

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II kicked off a summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Jordanian-Russian strategic partnership, as well as the latest regional and international developments.

In a one-on-one meeting followed by expanded talks at the Kremlin, emphasis was placed on the need to sustain consultation and coordination between the two countries on various common issues of concern and enhanced cooperation in various economic, military and security domains.

In joint statement to the press following the bilateral meeting, His Majesty affirmed the deep ties that Jordan and Russia share, noting that "this is an auspicious year" marking the 55th anniversary of establishing ties, just as last year was equally important.

Referring to Mideast peace process, the King commended Russia's important role and President Putin efforts to reach a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, leading to achieve more "hope" in the region. The King cited his meeting with President Putin in 2017 and "the leadership that you showed, as well as the joint cooperation between our two countries on bringing better days to Syria".

His Majesty said President Putin’s directives last year allowed for "much stronger Jordanian-Russian coordination, and we have been able to make good political grounds in southern Syria, and this is due to your guidance and your vision of trying to solve the issues there as quickly as possible".

Highlighting the close coordination between the two countries, the King said he expects this year will mark further advancement in cooperation.

On his Part, President Putin welcomed King Abdullah and expressed Russia’s keenness on bolstering cooperation with Jordan.

Addressing the King, Putin stated " We have met one year ago sharp in Moscow. Both we and our colleagues are in constant contact with one another. Certainly, personal meetings are always very important" .

"In the course of our meeting, we are going to talk about our bilateral agenda, as well as about the situation in the region, but from the outset, let me tell you that this year, we are celebrating the 55th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic ties between our countries," President Putin added. "We are going to further strengthen our mutual trust and cooperation," he said.

Discussions at the meeting, attended by HRH Prince Ghazi Bin Mohammad, the King's chief adviser for religious and cultural affairs and the personal envoy of His Majesty King Abdullah, touched on ways to broadening cooperation between Jordan and Russia in the trade domain, including boosting exports and Jordanian agro-products to Russian market by facilitating procedures in this regard.

Talks, which continued over a lunch banquet, tackled coordination mechanisms and enhancing collaboration between Amman and Moscow in various vital sectors, where a broad commitment to convene the Jordanian-Russian joint committee meetings prior to the end of the year was affirmed.

The deliberations also touched on exploring the possibility of utilizing Jordan's sole marine outlet the Aqaba port as a regional hub for Russian exports to access various markets, namely the African ones.

Moreover, talks also dealt with the memorandum of understanding between Jordan and the Eurasian Economic Union which include Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan,which is expected to facilitate entry of made-in-Jordan products to these countries.

The Palestinian issue figured high during talks that the King said efforts must be stepped up to break the stalemate in the peace process in order to establish a just and comprehensive peace, based on two-state solution and in accordance with the international legitimacy resolutions and the and the Arab Peace Initiative, and conducive to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as per 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Also, the two leaders discussed the repercussions of the Syrian crisis, as well as efforts to realize a political solution to it,. In this regard, King Abdullah underscored that significant progress is needed to be achieved on the political track to ensure stability in Syria and the region.

Further, the King lauded the Russian pivotal role to work with Jordan and the United States to ensure the success of the de-escalation in southwest Syria zone, which could be implemented in other regions in Syria, in a bid to pave the way for a political solution through the Geneva process.

Crises, Mideast issues and ways to realize a political solution to them were also discussed, besides anti-terrorism efforts within a holistic strategy.

The talks were attended by Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs-of-Staff, Director of the General Intelligence, Adviser to His Majesty and National Policies Council Rapporteur, Jordan's Ambassador to Russia, Russian Foreign Minister, Russian Ambassador in Amman, and senior officials.
