Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held talks at Al Husseiniya Palace on Monday as part of ongoing coordination and consultation on developments related to the Palestinian issue and Jerusalem.

In a one-on-one meeting followed by expanded talks, King Abdullah said Jordan pursued efforts at international forums to defend the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of Palestinian brethren to set up their independent state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The King called on the international community to shoulder its responsibility to safeguard the rights of Palestinians, Arabs, Muslims and Christians in the city of Jerusalem, which is the key to achieving peace and stability in the region.

The talks also focused on the key role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the need for support by the international community of the agency, which has six million registered refugees.

Abbas briefed the King on his moves and meetings with international parties to face the threats posed to the Palestinian issue and Jerusalem.

Abbas said the Palestinian people valued the unified Jordanian-Palestinian position, and Jordan's tremendous efforts to support the Palestinians to regain their legitimate rights and protect Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, based on the Hashemite custodianship over the holy shrines.

The meeting was attended by the prime minister, the Royal Court chief, the minister of foreign and expatriates affairs, the director of the General Intelligence, the director of the King's office, and a number of senior Palestinian officials.
