FM participates in high-level UN General Assembly meetings

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, Wednesday took part in a ministerial meeting of the Global Counterterrorism Forum in New York, which was co-chaired by Morocco and the Netherlands.

In a statement made during the meeting, the minister voiced Jordan's commitment to working in cooperation and coordination with the global community to fight terrorism.

He also urged adopting a holistic approach to combat terrorism through resolving crises that give rise to despair and chaos which are the "breeding ground" for the spread of the terrorism.

The minister also took part in a meeting on preventing terrorist use of the internet at the UN General Assembly. The meeting was co-hosted by British Prime Minister, Theresa May, French President, Emmanuel Macron, and Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

Safadi underscored the need to strengthen efforts to eliminate terrorist groups, calling for coordinated regional and international efforts to counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

He also urged to stop the spread of extremist material online, stressing the need to address terrorist ideology. The minister noted that Jordan had presented initiatives that called to combat terrorism and extremism, including the Amman Message which clarifies Islamic values of moderation and justice.

Further, Safadi participated in a high-level meeting on Libya during which he emphasized the need to reach a political solution in accordance with the Skhirat agreement, a United Nations-led initiative that was signed in Morocco.

"Restoring security and stability to Libya is not just a Libyan necessity, but also for the region", said the minister.

The minister also met the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings. They spoke about the developments in the Palestinian issue and Syrian crisis.

Safadi also met with the Foreign Ministers of Lithuania Linas Linkevicius and Denmark Anders Samuelsen. They discussed bilateral relations and means of enhancing joint cooperation in all fields. They also reviewed regional developments and efforts to resolve regional crises.
